Ed’s True Calling
How Tony helped this high-achieving college student discover his ideal path.
THE CHALLENGE
Ed’s a high achiever. He finished high school in only 3 years and was in his last year of college. Although trained as a teacher, he wasn’t sure that’s what he wanted as a career. Outside of his schoolwork, Ed devoted a lot of time to a nonprofit where he helped enrich the relationships in his community. To help figure out what to do after graduation, he decided to work with Tony to guide him through the decision-making process.
THE SOLUTION
After surveying his options, Ed decided to enroll in a graduate school program that combined community outreach, his interest in government, and participation in the nonprofit sector. Ed moved to another part of the state and took a more responsible position in the nonprofit. After building a consulting practice that will draw upon his teaching background to assist other nonprofits, Ed was recruited to work at a national Youth Service Organization in Washington D.C.
“In our collaboration, we developed a system that helped Joe be sensitive to the first signs he was losing control. Once familiar with those warning signals, he worked with me to choose to behave differently. But things didn’t transform overnight. There were setbacks and successes. We looked for the learning that each situation had to offer.”–Tony
How Joe Took Control of His Anger
Tony helped Joe manage his heightened emotions.
THE CHALLENGE
Joe had an anger management problem. When things didn’t go his way, he exploded and drove a wedge between himself and those around him. He knew this was a problem, but didn’t know how to change his behavior.
THE SOLUTION
After paying exquisite attention to the triggers and responses that had become blind habits, Joe was able to regain the control he’d lost over his emotions. Now when Joe experiences anger, he does so with intention and purpose; he’s no longer held captive by a mindless reaction to a negative stimulus. Joe chooses with due consideration and awareness how to respond to each situation during his busy day.
